I believe the purpose of advising is to help every student reach their goals, providing them agency and power over their own education. This is what is most valuable for me as an advisor: when students feel empowered to explore their educational options and then the confidence to develop in their field. My advising style is comfortable, conversational, and based in my background as a middle school teacher. Each meeting I nurture the relationship that I’ve been building with the student, furthering their goals and stretching them towards independence. This connection matters as I act as their tether to academia; they come to understand their program through me and that is a remarkable responsibility.
